Protecting the Children

Mcdonalds11No, really. this is not from The Onion:

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has filed a lawsuit against McDonald’s Corp., claiming that the company’s meals with toys unfairly entice children into eating food that can do them harm.

The Washington advocacy group warned McDonald’s in June that it would sue if the company did not stop providing toys with children’s meals that have high amounts of sugar, calories, fat and salt. The suit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, seeks class-action status.[.  .  .]

The lead plaintiff in the suit is Monica Parham, a mother of two from Sacramento who said the company "uses toys as bait to induce her kids to clamor to go to McDonald’s," the organization said.

Ms. Parham has to sue McDonald’s rather than simply telling her children “no”? Walter Olson chronicles here.

  1. I think the plaintiff’s attorneys are enticing Ms. Parham to a greater degree than McDonalds is enticing her children with toys. After all, it isn’t a matter of Ms. Parham simply telling her children “no” its a matter of Ms. Parham not whipping out her wallet to pay for the Happy Meals. I’m not surprised that immaturity entices people to reach for prizes and ignore good judgment (Is there any difference between promising an adult huge wealth for suing a large corporation with a frivolous lawsuit and offering a kid a toy in a happy meal? Obviously not).

  2. I am not a huge fun of mcdonalds. But this is kind of silly. Most kids that are into happy meal toys cant drive to mcdonalds themselves and have their own money to buy this stuff.
