The tragic death Saturday morning of 28-year-old veteran marathoner, Ryan Shay, during the United States Olympic trials marathon in Central Park in New York City reminds us of a very important health tip — long-distance running is not particularly healthy.
Update: Another participant in the marathon died afterward.
It is interesting that when researching life expectancy of elite athletes, a Finnish group found that endurance athletes had the longest life expectancy of any group — 75.6 years — more than 6 years longer than the general population.
Another group studied the Twin Cities marathon over a decade. They found no mortality and 99.6% of injuries were minor.
Don’t know what to say, other than it seems to me that running 26 miles isn’t a good idea…
