It’s not been a good off-season for the University of Oklahoma Sooners football team.
First, there was this popular entry in the Wizard of Odds’ digital billboard contest.
Then, that was followed by the NCAA leveling additional sanctions on the OU program, including making the Sooners vacate their 8 wins during the 2005 season and extending the program’s probation through 2010.
But the above is nothing compared to legendary Sooners head coach Barry Switzer flashing the “Hook’em Horns” sign (hat tip Jay Christensen) with Texas head coach, Mack Brown.
Or maybe Coach Switzer had something else in mind than “Hook’em Horns?”
Big T –
I recognize baiting when I see it, but I won’t bite.
Not many folks know (or remember) that Mack was Barry’s offensive coordinator at OU in 1984.
This picture has circulated all over the OU football bulletin boards. “The King” went to a dinner honoring Mack, and was later quoted as saying “Of course I support the University of Texas – whippin’ them kept me in a job for almost 20 years…..”
It galls the football purists, but as an NFL coach, Switzer won more Super Bowls than Marty Schottenheimer, Dan Reeves, Marv Levy, Bud Grant, Andy Reid, Lovie Smith, and Herm Edwards all together.
And, of course, we all know that the UT stadium in Austin is named after an All American football player from OU. I hear that he went on to be a decent colllege coach after learning at the feet of Bud Wilkinson in Norman.
Nine weeks until the 2007 RRS, and the juices are already flowin…..
