The house on the left above is an example of what half a million bucks will buy you in the Village of Alden Bridge, a nice area of The Woodlands in suburban north Houston — a 3,600 square foot decorator’s home on a big, tree-filled lot, flagstone covered patio, 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, gameroom, media, 2 staircases, dynamic kitchen, and a paneled study.
The house on the right is an example of what half a million bucks will buy you in Los Angeles — a 1,200 square foot, two-bedroom Craftsman-style house with a “sizable” frontyard in a neighborhood that is “on its way up.”

With all due respect, there are some pretty crummy houses for sale for a half mil inside the loop.
I would speculate that the ad valorem taxes on the Woodlands home exceeds that of the LA home.
Probably true, but I speculate that the total tax burden of living in The Woodlands is still less than living in L.A.
At Least There’s One Reason To Live In Houston
Every now and then, when I’m driving around and viewing the aesthetically challenged Houston landscape, I wonder why in the hell I live here.
Then I read something like “What a half-million bucks buys you” — from the excellent blog Houston’s Clear …
I should note that you can get a pretty damn decent house here in the Heights for a half mill, too. The money you save on gas by having a shorter commute you can use to hire someone to mow your lawn. 🙂
