Light rail where? In New Mexico?!

metrocar2.jpgThe economic pox of light rail is even filtering down to New Mexico, which enjoys one of the least densely populated areas in the nation. Despite the absurdity of this economic boondoggle, this common sense analysis keeps a straight face while evaluating the light rail proposal.

  1. Light Rail is a pox ($300M – twice what it would have been w/o DeLay), yet we spend billions to subsidize sprawl (and pollution)? (Widening freeways to 18+ lanes).
Additionally, the State is spending into debt to build roads, rather than appropriately tax something (perhaps gasoline?) because our elected officials lack an ability to lead.
(sorry if you’ve addressed any of that before, this is your first post on rail i’ve seen)
If rail is pox, then our other “transportation planning” is plague!

  2. Oh, that’s soooo depressing. I lived in Albuquerque for awhile and just loved it, but the whole state has a population of under 2 million and Abq is around a half million I believe. They don’t need light rail there! I’ve experienced rush hour traffic in Abq. It’s not that bad!
Bad idea, bad idea, bad idea…

  3. …but I think that’s the whole idea. The rush hours that you may have experienced in other larger cities – that’s what they’re trying to prevent. I think it’s smart planning for a sustainable community, and not a “bad idea” at all! Finally smart public transportation planning in the Southwest.
